Replika won't talk to you out loud until you pay. Once you do, that voice gets a body you can drop into your living room in AR. Kindroid flips it around: you build the voice yourself, and you pay before you hear a single word, because there's no free tier at all.
Replika goes first, since no other companion brand has been at this longer. Its voice belongs to someone, a persistent avatar with a face, an outfit and a memory of your past conversations. AR mode puts that avatar in your actual room. If presence matters more to you than audio fidelity, that's actually useful, and we couldn't confirm AR on either of the other two apps in this piece.
